What is Zygoma Reduction Surgery in Korea?

Zygoma reduction surgery, also known as cheekbone reduction surgery, is a facial contouring procedure that reduces and repositions prominent cheekbones to create a slimmer, softer, and more balanced facial shape.

The cheekbones play a key role in defining facial width and projection. When excessively prominent, they may create a wide, harsh, or aged appearance. Zygoma reduction surgery in Korea focuses not only on reducing volume, but also on repositioning the bone to achieve natural facial harmony without sagging.

Zygoma Reduction Surgery is recommended if:

  • You have a wide face caused by protruding cheekbones

  • Your facial proportions appear imbalanced

  • You want a slimmer and more refined facial contour

  • You want a softer or more feminine facial shape

  • You have facial asymmetry due to uneven cheekbone projection

Zygoma Reduction Surgery Steps

1. Minimal incision is made inside the mouth.

A small incision is made inside the mouth using an endoscopic system. This ensures no visible scarring.

2. L-Shaped Osteotomy & Arch Osteotomy

An L-shaped osteotomy is performed on the anterior cheekbone, and the zygomatic arch is precisely cut posteriorly using endoscopic assistance.

Unlike traditional methods that remove bone segments, the cheekbone is repositioned rather than removed, allowing for maximum reduction while preserving structural stability and minimizing skin sagging.

3. Inward & Backward Rotation

The cheekbone is rotated inward and backward to reduce facial width while maintaining natural facial proportions.

4. 4-Point Fixation

The cheekbone is securely fixated at four points using medical-grade screws to prevent: Non-union, Bone displacement, and Shape changes over time.

This step is only unique to GIRIN.

Why 4-Point Fixation Matters

The zygoma is closely connected to the masseter muscle, which is responsible for chewing, speaking, and facial expression.

If fixation is insufficient:

  • Muscle movement may displace the bone
  • Fixation materials may fracture
  • Non-union may occur
  • Skin sagging may develop

Secure 4-point fixation provides stronger structural stability and reduces long-term complications.
