What is hump reduction or dorsal reduction?

Hump nose correction, also known as humpectomy or dorsal reduction is the procedure that removes a raised bump on the nasal bridge. It creates a smooth nose and lifts up the droopy nose tip.

Hump reduction is recommended for you if:

  • You have a protruding bone or cartilage on your nose bridge.

  • You have a trauma or injury-induced hump.

Hump reduction surgery methods

1. For subtle nose humps

When the hump is subtle, it can be fixed easier and quicker. A smooth nasal bridge can be created by rasping down the hump. The surgery takes about 30-40 minutes and can be done with minimal incision.

2. For severe nose humps

When the hump is large, the area where the hump has been removed may be flat and the nasal cavity may be exposed.

Thus, additional osteotomy of the nasal bone may be required to close the open nasal cavity. Autologous cartilage spreader grafting may be required in cases when the hump reduction causes breathing problems.

3. When the nose looks humped due to the droopy tip

If the nose appears humped due to the droopy nose tip, it can be corrected by augmenting the nasal tip. Typically, the patient's own septal/ear cartilage is used for this purpose.
